Choosing a Sheltie

Is a Shetland Sheepdog right for you?
Adding a dog to your family is a big step.  The average lifespan of a Shetland sheepdog is 12-15 years.  Do all members of your family want a dog?  Are you prepared to care for a dog for its entire life?
Shelties are an intelligent and active breed.  Puppies and adults require daily exercise and can get into trouble if the become bored.  Are you prepared for training and exercising a dog?
A well groomed and cared for Sheltie is a beautiful dog.  This is a double coated breed, meaning it carries a thick wooly undercoat and a longer outercoat.  On average, a Sheltie should be thoroughly brushed and have its toenails trimmed weekly.  Bathing should be done approximately monthly to keep the skin and coat healthy.  Shelties shed heavily 1-2 times a year and will need extra brushing during these times.  Some shedding will occur year-round.  Every dog should have its teeth brushed daily to prevent tartar & plaque build-up.  Are you prepared for the care a dog will need to keep its coat, nails, and teeth healthy?  Are you prepared for dog hair on your clothes and furniture?
